Metal-organic coordination architectures of bis(N-imidazolyl) pyridazine: Syntheses, structures, emission and photocatalytic properties

In efforts to explore the effects of metal ions, counter anions on the structures and properties of metal-organic complexes, seven new complexes [ZnL4(OH)2] (1), {[ZnL(AcO)2](CH3CH2OH)}? (2), {[ZnL(H2O)4](SO4)}? (3), [CdL4(OH)2] (4), {[CdL(AcO)2](CH3CH2OH)}? (5), {[CdL(H2O)4](SiF6)}? (6) and {[Cu2L2(SO4)2(H2O)2](H2O)}? (7) [L = 3,6-bis(N-imidazolyl) pyridazine] were synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 4 have similar mononuclear structures. Complexes 2, 3 and 6 have 1-D chain structures, while 5 reveals 2-D neutral infinite sheet structure. One 1-D chain and one 2-D sheet form complicated structure of complex 7. The ligands L adopt didentate bridging mode to coordinate to the metal ions in complexes 2, 3, and 5-7. Obviously, the structural differences among them are attributable to the differences of metal ions, counter anions and coordination modes of ligand. The fluorescent property of complexes 1-6 have been investigated and discussed. In addition, complexes 1-5 exhibit photocatalytic activity and selectivity for dye degradation under UV light.

In this paper, by introducing the strong electron-withdrawing moiety of difluoropyridinyl to the C^NN type main-ligand, and combining a trifluoromethylated-triazole (fptz) or a picolinate (pic) as the ancillary ligand, we have synthesized two new iridium(iii) complexes with blue emission, i.e., iridium(iii) bis[3-methyl-6-(2?,4?-difluoro-pyridinato)pyridazine] trifluoromethylated-triazole (1) and iridium(iii) bis[3-methyl-6-(2?,4?-difluoro-pyridinato)pyridazine] picolinate (2). These are the first C^NN type iridium(iii) complexes with an emission wavelength shorter than 500 nm. In particular, with the increased electron withdrawing property from the ancillary ligand of fptz, the emission from 1 is more blue. Additionally, based on quantum chemistry calculations, it was found that, different from the general case of the main-ligand and Ir-atom distribution, the electrons of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) also partially locate at the ancillary ligand with very strong electron withdrawing properties. This phenomena is seldom reported in the literature. Organic light-emitting diodes with 1 or 2 as a dopant have been fabricated. High efficiencies of 41.6 cd A-1 (20.1%) with sky-blue emission and 62.8 cd A-1 (26.5%) with blue-green emission were obtained. These are the first blue electroluminescent materials based on iridium complexes with a C^NN type ligand so far.

Their physical properties results in solid state show that the characteristic Ln3+-based (Ln = Nd, Yb or Er) near-infrared (NIR) luminescent emissions with relatively higher quantum ef ficiencies than those of the respective Zn-Ln-arrayed complexes in solution, are observed, besides the distinctive increase of thermal and mechanical stabilities. Especially for the Zn2+-Yb3+-containing PMMA-supported metallopolymers, the concentration self-quenching of Yb3+-based hybrid materials could be effectively prevented even at 2.5 mol%, and the replacement of PS or PVK is also helpful for energy transfer.

Binding free energy per unimer (-DeltaG/n) increases upon extension from monomer to dimer to trimer, signifying a positive cooperative effect. Micromolar binding affinity (Kd = 1.25 ¡À 0.1 muM) was determined for the duplex trimer by ITC in 1,2-dichloroethane at 20C. These data provide further insight into the structural and interactional features of synthetic duplex oligomers required for high-affinity, high-specificity binding and define new recognition elements for use in nanoscale assembly.
